In the life-affirming documentary, "Amalie is dying", we follow 21-year-old Amalie Vilslev in her very last days. She suffered from a rare, chronic disease which meant that her lungs didn’t function properly. She was lung transplanted, but in 2022, her body rejected the new lungs; she was dying.
The documentary is brutally honest in its presentation of death; in the very first minutes of the documentary, Amalie shows the coffin she was buried in. She piercingly narrated her own story, which is beyond effectual as she was dead when the show aired. This could easily trigger the audience but since the documentary erupted based on heaps of conversations with Amalie and her family, the audience received her story how she wanted to; Thousands of people wrote comments on social media, sparking a national conversation on death and making it less of a taboo. They echoed Amalie's message: "You must live now,” she said.
