Fascist “active clubs” — decentralised white supremacist and neo-Nazi fight groups — have expanded globally in recent years, moving from online spaces into real-world training.
Using both traditional on-the-ground reporting, digital forensics and open-source intelligence tools, CBC’s visual investigations unit identified members and pinpointed training locations of some of Canada’s most notorious groups.
Despite efforts to conceal identities and locations, the reporting revealed groups training in public parks, martial arts studios, and fitness centres.
While there has been previous reporting in Canada about active clubs, CBC News was the first media organisation to track locations and expose individual members. Some of the businesses that were used to train by these groups promoted inclusion and offered classes for children and families from diverse backgrounds.
The investigation led to members of these groups being banned from gyms, heightened police awareness, and reduced their ability to train publicly and intimidate communities.

Eric Szeto is an investigative journalist who works on impact stories — unearthing hard-to-find information through documents, open-source techniques, confidential sources and hidden cameras. Past work includes investigations into extremist groups, drug trafficking, weapons trade, AI deepfake porn operators, and forced labour in the PPE and agricultural industry.
He has won several awards, including the prestigious Canadian Sidney Hillman award in 2025 for a documentary he and his team made about the Darién Gap, a treacherous 100-kilometre stretch of jungle between Colombia and Panama. The team documented the journey people took to get to the United States and Canada — and interviewed the leader of the Gulf Clan, Colombia's largest drug cartel, which profits off the migrants.
