While documenting the 2019 protests in Ecuador, a filmmaker discovers that media manipulation is a historical pattern rather than an isolated phenomenon. Through case studies in Ecuador, Colombia, and Spain, the series reveals how censorship and self-censorship intertwine to define the limits of information control.
CHAPTER 1: Breaking the Media Siege October 2019, Ecuador. Amidst a massive popular uprising against the government’s economic measures, mainstream news coverage seems to tell a different story, leading the population to question their trust in the media. From this distrust, an emblem emerges that soon spreads to other countries in the region facing similar situations: ‘Let’s break the media siege’. As the official narrative is challenged, a deeper question arises: it is not a matter of whether the media is lying, but for how long they have been doing so.

Daniel Yépez Brito is an Ecuadorian writer and filmmaker. He holds a Master's degree in Humanities: Art, Culture, and Literature; he is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Political Analysis and a specialization in Psychology. His films have been screened in over 20 countries and featured at major film festivals such as Amsterdam, Annecy, Cannes, and New York. He has directed short films under the supervision of master filmmakers like Abbas Kiarostami and Asghar Farhadi. He is a five-time winner of the Quito Municipality Arts and Sciences Awards. His first book, The Little Prince and the Fox of the Andes, was a bestseller in four Amazon categories. In 2023, he released the documentary Neisi: The Strength of a Dream, which follows the story of Ecuador's first female Olympic gold medalist and won the 2024 IILA-Cinema Award in Rome. He is the co-founder and director of the Catequilla Moon Museum and the Interactive Museum of Augmented Reality (MIRA), where he merges art, technology, and Andean worldview.
