Experts describe it as “the worst scam in the world.” The scheme targets children and teenagers, coercing them into sexually compromising situations and, in some cases, driving them to suicide.
The documentary follows the story of twelve-year-old Carson Cleland, a fun-loving boy who enjoyed joking with his sisters and spending summers at the lake before becoming the victim of a sextortion scam. After being blackmailed and unable to pay the demanded $25, Carson took his own life. He was one of 40 children who have died as a result of sextortion in Canada, including five victims in a single year.
To help prevent further tragedies, Carson’s parents share their devastating experience and the warning signs they wish they had recognized earlier. The investigative team goes undercover, posing as teenagers online and allowing themselves to be targeted by sextortionists. This reveals the scripts, manipulation tactics, and psychological pressure scammers use to lure victims and extract money.
The programme also travels to Nigeria to confront members of the criminal network commonly known as the “Yahoo Boys,” conducting exclusive interviews about the financial motivations behind these crimes. The findings are later presented to Canada’s Minister of Justice, Sean Fraser, who commits to pursuing legislation specifically addressing sextortion and strengthening law enforcement’s ability to prosecute offenders.
