In her debut documentary series "The Takeaway Chinese", Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen introduces a novel storytelling approach. It’s original and distinct from conventional narratives. As a young creator, she has discovered her own way of storytelling, which resonates deeply with young audiences.
She engages extensively – and in dialect – with her adoptive father John and delves deeply into (international) regulations, featuring predecessors ("the little Koreans"), experts, adoptive parents, and peers.
Her findings are delivered lightly with casual voice-overs, stylish design, and a jolly soundtrack. Yet, this cannot mask how painful and confronting this public quest for Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen's identity can be – and how much pain, sorrow, and wrongdoing she encounters in the adoption of foreign children.

Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen works as a program maker at Omroep ZWART. She was adopted from China as a baby and ended up in a family in West Zeeland Flanders. In the four-part documentary series 'De Afhaalchinees' (NPO3, Omroep ZWART) she used her own adoption story as a common thread to (re)examine the Dutch side of the adoption system. Kelly-Qian prefers to make programs about difficult and complex subjects with a large dose of humor and nuance.
